3 Golf Courses You Must Play in Pattaya
Anyone who has spent any length of time in Pattaya will be more than aware that the city is a haven for golf fans. What they may not have realised, however, is that the city has the highest concentration of courses of any region in South East Asia. If you drive in a radius just 45 minutes out of Central Pattaya you will find 20 championship standard golf courses, each of which offer their own unique quirks and challenges.
The courses range in price and quality but in this article, we will focus on the best three in our opinion. There are simply so many to choose from, no doubt there will be those who are more than happy to offer alternatives.
Siam Country Club – Old Course
The home of the Honda LPGA Thailand, the Old Course at Siam Country Club, just a short drive outside Pattaya, is definitely one of the best in Thailand and is always included in the top 10 Golf Courses in Thailand lists compiled by a variety of sources. This is a very mature course and has been established for nearly 50 years. The fairways and greens are lined with trees and the course is kept in pristine condition throughout the year.
The original course was designed by I. Izumi in 1969 but has undergone some alterations over the years, perhaps most notably being the recent changes made by Lee Schmidt of Schmidt and Curley Design Inc. This biggest change was the removal of some trees to allow more breeze on to the course which made for a more challenging but cooler experience. The course has 101 bunkers so accuracy is essential if you to play to your handicap. The Old Course is aimed at lower handicappers but is something that should be experienced by anyone regardless of their standard.
Laem Chabang International Country Club
Laem Chabang International Country Club is located around 25 minutes away from Pattaya and is a particular favourite with most golfers. Many argue that it offers better value for money than the Old Course whilst sacrificing very little in terms of quality. You would hard pressed to find a course more scenic than Laem Chabang with mature trees and beautiful flowers adorning most holes. The holes are not number but instead have names that adds to the uniqueness of the experience.
You will find 27-holes, all of which are immaculately maintained so you can be confident that you will experience one of the best golf courses in South East Asia and therefore cannot be missed by anyone with even just a passing interest in golf.
Siam Country Club – The Plantation
There are three courses to be found at Siam Country Club and The Plantation is the second excellent course with the newer Waterside just being pushed out of the top 3. The Plantation was designed by Lee Schmidt and offers something different to the Old Course which appeals to many players. The course first opened in 2008 and is maturing rapidly and now gives the impression of being far more established than it actually is.
Renowned for its high elevation tees and abundance of bunkers, The Plantation is a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable golfing experience. Needless to say, the facilities are truly world-class and wouldn’t look out of place at any of the top clubs in the world.
