Having become an Asian Tour event in 2009, the King’s Cup golf tournament continues to go from strength to strength. The 2016 King’s Cup, which will be played at Phoenix Gold Golf Club in Pattaya, Thailand, from July 28th to the 31st will be co-sanctioned by the European Tour. This will be the first time the King’s Cup will be a European Tour event and means Thailand will feature on the European Tour, twice this season.
The Phoenix Gold Golf Club was opened in 1993 and boasts three, nine-hole golf courses called Mountain, Lakes and Ocean. In 2013, having been taken over by Ms Chanya Swangchitr, the golf club received a major investment, which was used to upgrade the course and the facilities.
The tournament will have a prize fund of $750,000 and the defending champion, is Thaworn Wiratchant, who also owns the record for the most wins on the Asian Tour, with a total of 18. The field for the 2016 King’s Cup, will mainly consist of Asia Tour players, of which there will be 90 in total, with 25 players from the European Tour and an additional 25 players from the Thailand PGA.
Excitement is sure to build as the tournament draws near, especially as the King’s Cup event did not take place in 2015. The tournament will be broadcast live by Asian Tour Media, which has the potential to reach of 700 million homes.
The King’s Cup is set to make a spectacular return to action in 2016, for what is sure to be a thrilling tournament.
