Did you know Pattaya has an international airport
Now for many of you either visiting or living here in Pattaya your go to airport is probably Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok or failing that Don Muang Airport also located in Bangkok but what many of you might not be aware of Pattaya actually has its own international airport which in recent years has had substantial money invested into it to improve facilities and services attracting more and more airlines and increasing the number of flights in and out of the airport.
So for those looking to either fly domestically or internationally here is a little information on Pattaya Airport or U-Tapao International Airport as it is also know.
The airport itself is located roughly half way between Pattaya and Rayong some 40 kilometres from each and is also a Royal Thai Navy Air Station and base of operations for the Navy’s First Air Wing. This is probably why if you have flown from the airport before you will have noticed you were asked not to take photos from the plane during landing and take-off. The airport is comprised of two terminals servicing both domestic and international flights which take off from the airports 3,505 meter long runway. The terminal like we said has had significant investment spent on it over the last few years and now offers souvenir shops, restaurants, coffee shops and tourist information facilities. There is also long and short stay parking on site as well as regular bus services to both Pattaya and Rayong as well other local towns, taxi rank and rental car facilities.
In recent years more and more airlines have begun using the airport and now the list of airlines flying in and out of the airport includes Thai Airasia, Bangkok Airways, Airasia, Hainan Airlines, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Qatar Airways operating a mixture of daily and 4-weekly flights to a host of domestic and international destinations.
Domestic destinations include Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani.
International destinations include several cities in China including Shanghai, Macau, Nanning and Nanchang, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Singapore.
The Thai government is planning on extending the airports transportation network further by adding increased destinations under the government’s expansion of the Eastern Economic Corridor as well as plans to connect the airport with its own railway line linking the airport to Pattaya and Bangkok also currently being finalised.
With U-Tapao airport roughly a 40 minute drive from the centre of Pattaya it is considerably closer than both Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports and if you’re considering flying domestically should definitely warrant your consideration as an airport of choice.
