Now for many of you that have visited Pattaya before or for those that live here most of you will have probably visited the beautiful island of Koh Larn which is located a little over 11 kilometres off of the shore of Pattaya. Now what some of you might not know there is an alternative for those looking for a day out to a tropical island paradise. That’s right the island of Koh Khram is just over 27 kilometres off of the coast of Pattaya and is protected by the Royal Thai Navy meaning that it is not assessable to tourists all year round in an effort to protect its natural beauty and conserve endangered wildlife that also call the uninhabited island home, such as the giant sea turtle. Currently a limited selection of chartered tour companies run day trips to the island which is a little over 4 square kilometres in size and is covered mostly in forest, and is more reminiscent of the islands found to the south of the kingdom in places such as Krabi and Phuket.
The island marks the southeast most point of the Bay of Bangkok and is accompanied by its smaller sister island Koh Khram Noi which sits just to the North of the island and also falls under the protection of the Royal Thai Navy and again is uninhabited. For those looking for a more relaxed and chilled out island adventure Koh Khram is definitely a place to visit while here in Pattaya the island has two bays with several white sandy beaches which due to the limited number of chartered boats allowed to visit the island means the beaches are never very crowded and the water quality is amazing, crystal clear in fact which makes the island an extremely attractive for those that like to observe marine life whilst snorkelling which thanks to being under the protection of the Navy there is an abundance of.
As we have already mentioned the island is uninhabited so there is no infrastructure meaning that people planning on making a trip over will need to pack their own food and drinks unless the tour company you have chosen to use is providing that service, the lack of beach vendors and souvenir salesman in our opinion provides a more relaxed back to nature experience for those that decided to make the trip. Like we have already mentioned the island is not open to the public all year round and if you are planning on making a trip best to check with travel providers the dates the Navy are allowing the public to visit the island, however during high season people are normally permitted to visit, the island closes at certain times to allow so the protected sea turtles to breed on the island without interference.
For those looking to experience Koh Khram chartered day trips are run from both Pattaya and Sattahip, it is important to bear in mind that there is no regular transportation to and from the island so once your there your there for the duration of the tour so best to pack everything you feel you might need.
So for those looking for a more relaxed back to nature island trip a day out to Koh Khram could be the ideal destination for you.
