Reality Tattoo’s shop is one of the largest and most modern in Pattaya. They can accommodate up to 3 customers at any one time as they have 3 tattoo artists and other specialist artists that can be called upon if needed.
When we arrived at Reality Tattoo’s we were instantly greeted by Spicy, who has worked here for over 3 years, since the parlour opened in fact. He is an instantly likeable Thai guy who speaks very good English and has a great sense of humour too. What became apparent very early on in our discussion is that Spicy doesn’t like tattoos, he loves them! It’s a common and admirable theme throughout the tattooing artist community in Pattaya.
Spicy’s First Tattoo
Spicy’s got his first tattoo on his left lower leg when he was 15 years old, a Japanese inspired design with a samurai warrior face surrounded by a colourful red and black patterned outline, it’s a little faded now, but tells quite a story from his youth. He then revealed that he made the tattoo himself, which is rather impressive to say the least! Since then well over a decade has past and Spicy’s style has grown too and he is now a well-respected tattoo artist. Martin, of Martin Tattoo, trained Spicy in his early years and he speaks very highly of him and what he taught him.
Styles Of Tattoo
All styles of tattoo are catered for from traditional bamboo tattoos by special arrangement, temple style tattoos to modern 3D styles. Temporary tattoos are also available, these are simply painted on and last 1 to 2 weeks, just like you see in the movies! The most popular inking for men are top of arm and shoulder tattoos, with ladies often wanting more discreet ankle, back and tummy designs.
Mr. Lang then returned to Reality and told us more about the tattoo community, safety procedures and the International Tattoo Convention that is held in Pattaya and Bangkok. He is one of the most passionate tattoo fans we have met and took great pleasure in showing us his latest full back design.
We can’t say what it is as it’s a surprise for a very close friend! Mr. Lang takes care of business and told us about his safety procedures regarding needles and inks. All customers’ tattoos are made using new sterile needles and new inks for every tattoo and all needles are collected and stored in a jar and taken for disposal after use at a local hospital that can safely destroy medical waste. (All needles and inks are imported from America and the UK as they are the best quality. These inks last longer than some that can fade quickly.)
Tattoos are generally priced as a job, this will vary depending on size, complexity and how many colours of ink are used. There is a minimum charge 1,000 Baht for a simple small design and a minimum of 2,000 Baht for one hour. Large full back tattoos can take up to 25 hours or more with several 8-9 hour sessions for the tough guys! Mr. Lang says it’s important to make time for the customer and for the special urgent jobs he and his team can work very late to get the work done.
International Tattoo Convention
The International Tattoo Convention takes place in Pattaya and Bangkok annually. It is an opportunity for tattoo artists from around the kingdom to compete for trophies and gain recognition in this close knit community.
Reality Tattoos also cater for customers wanting piercings. This includes, ear, nose, eye brow, tongue, nipples, belly button and tribal earrings too!
Motor Cycle Club
Mr. Lang also talked about his love of motorcycles and the motor cycle club culture and has many good biker friends from 2 of the best known MC’s in Pattaya. Burapa Bike Week is one of the biggest MC gatherings in South East Asia and has been held in Pattaya for 18 years. This event is held over 3 days and creates good, well deserved business opportunities for Reality Tattoos. His 20 year old son is now learning to tattoo and his son’s girlfriend is already inking for the ladies, especially for the rather discreet, more private designs! (Tattoos are becoming more popular with the ladies over recent years.)
