Following a meeting which was held yesterday (Feb 6) between some high level government officials the decision was made to submit a draft proposal which would, if passed allow some high earning foreigners to work without a work permit.
The news however might be bitter sweet for many foreign workers here in Thailand however as the criteria to get one of the new “Smart Visa’s” which would allow you to work without a work permit is quite strict.
To be eligible foreigners need to be earning a minimum of 200,000 baht in specific fields of employment such as robotics, biochemicals, or the medical industry, among others.
Speaking about the new draft for the “Smart Visa” the Deputy Government spokesperson Werachon Sukondhapatipak said foreigners in possession of the new visa would be able to work outside of their specified field without a work permit.
The new visa would also allow the holders wife and children over the age of 18 to be able to work here in Thailand without a work permit for the period of one year.
The new Smart Visas are valid for a period of 4 years; they were first launch in February 2018.
